Pleasant, hardworking, and a bit naff

Did you know that Che Guevara died on this day in 1967? I will keep my eyes peeled for any mourning communists.

I love Nicky's Dangermouse layout. Too fantastic :D

I went to see my supervisor Dr. J this morning. I like him, he's nice. We talked about the whole year-in-industry prospect - I'll be taking a year out of my degree to work for a biochemical company. He asked me what I wanted him to put on my reference.

I don't really like questions like that. It reminds me of an interview for a job I had once where I was asked to describe myself - it seems to require one to be immodest. Fortunately I know Dr. J appreciates humour, so I gave him a grin and asked him to write that I was pleasant, hard-working, and an asset to any company. He smiled at this, and assured me that he'd write something good, so I am pleased :)

I actually met some Freshers yesterday! Heh. As a Wise Second Year now, I have lots of advice to offer. Yay. My best advice (Tried and True, folks) is "Stick at it". Oh, and "Do lots of things and don't be scared".

I'm working on an article for the Christian magazine on campus. I thought it would be good to write something about acceptance as I often have a lot of trouble remembering I'm accepted. After all the questions and Confusion about my faith, my desire to become absolutely fantastic and totally sorted makes me wonder if I am, in fact, a bit naff. After all, lots of Christians seem to be supremely sorted (even if some of them also seem a bit daft in areas, particularly Creationists) and the worry that I am going to be Not Particularly Good is slowing me down somewhat.

*sighs* On the other hand, I figure that even if I will be the very model of naffness, God would rather have that than nothing, and in any case, I have that I am a child of God, loved unconditionally and all that (just like everyone else. And you. Yes, you! Mler!)

We have a church up our road - I went there on Sunday. It was very friendly but God seemed to be treated as a very distant concept - a Sunday school teacher assured us that although we couldn't meet Jesus, we could learn about him, and the preacher strangely changed "Christ has died, Christ is risen..." to "Christ has died, Christ is present..." Which is fair enough in some respects, but forgetting the resurrection seems to be the whole "Modern science proves that Christianity isn't true, so let's go on being Christians in principle but not believe any of that nonsense" approach and I really really hope they didn't mean it like that.

Oh well.

Funnily enough, I'm off to church now - beginning of term service at the church nearest uni :) Toodle-oooooooo....
