God hangs out in shopping centres too
Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001 - 10:16 Finally got my monitor :D I am suffering from overinspiration at the moment. OK, so that's better than writer's block any day, but it's still frustrating. All those thoughts and no time to put them anywhere. On Sunday I went to work as usual, and who should I hear in Marks and Sparks (or Magic and Sparkles, as they are now calling themselves) but a lovely brass band playing Christmas carols? And not just any brass band, it was the Salvation Army. I hung around for a bit just to listen. It's so dull hearing 'I wish it could be Christmas every day', 'Merry Christmas Everybody', 'Stop the Cavalry', 'Step into Christmas', 'Simply having a wonderful Christmas time' at work every time I go in, which are all about Christmas but for me they're nothing about Christmas at all, just seasonal pop hits that sold out loads because they fit the public mood. I like those songs, but I prefer Christmas carols. Soon it was time for work and I wandered along, spotting, of all things, a bunch of Gospel singers. What a stretch! :-) We have these white, mainly middle aged brass players and then there was a group of young black people, singing contemporary music - both doing what the loyal public should do at Christmas and filling the shopping centres with Christmassy cheer. The small bit of me actually paying attention allowed the realisation to dawn - because it's Christmas, people are allowed to do the politically incorrect thing, get out there in public and sing about how wonderful Jesus is. Because it's Christmas, worshipping wherever we are is not a weird thing that only fanatics do, who've never heard that our awesome God should keep himself in our churches/temples/insert appropriate place of worship here/boring assemblies/infant RE lessons where he belongs and not go mucking around in the world he created. What an inconsiderate thing to do, you'd think he owned the place or something. :D No, because it's Christmas, there are people who want to hear it. If you don't, well that's fine, your choice. If you do... come join us. God is awesome.
