The Case for Snow
Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 - 18:08 Silly things I did yesterday Spent at least twenty minutes searching for a Scientific American article in the library, and then realising I was looking in the volumes of New Scientist. Left my phone on loud during a lecture. It rang. Luckily it was with a nice lecturer. Breathed in some helium... I love doing that. Silly things I didn't do yesterday I wasn't the one who sat on one of those folding chairs in the lecture theatre, leaned forward, and then fell onto the floor because the chair had folded back up. That was Kate :) I also (thankfully) wasn't the one who was attempting to induce tears by holding vast quantities of chopped onions to an eye. That was about half my practical class. In fact, you'd be amazed how difficult it is to induce tears when you actually need to study them. Poking, prodding, staring, and even chopping onions suddenly don't work! Thinking of sad things didn't work, because everyone looked so funny, but not funny enough to produce tears of laughter. The lecturer who runs microbiology produced some tears in little flasks (Eppendorfs) and claimed they were collected from third years who had failed their finals. Quite. I've been going around taking pictures of snow today :) Taking pictures in the dark is difficult but amazingly, it can actually be done with some cunning adjustment of shutter-speed etc. Aaah, I love snow. You might have had that impression already. I was a tad annoyed when I saw some people out having a snowball fight when I was walking to my chemistry practical this morning. I love how most students don't seem to have any trouble reverting back to childlike behaviour, I think it's because we're mostly around the same age, and because most of us are mad enough to behave like that (we haven't been adults for very long, after all), we feel no embarrassment in doing so. There's a snowman outside my block :) And everything's so white! So beautiful! There's something very calming about a soft white world, everything seems a bit quieter to me... and everything slows down. It has to. I know that snow is bad news for farmers and people who have to drive lots of places and for anyone who doesn't really like snow... but on the other hand, I think snow is something that is needed by a high-technology society, a way of letting us know we haven't conquered the world yet. What can I say? God's in charge. So snow causes road accidents? So does rain. And fog. And bright sunlight. And alcohol. And loud children. And driving. :) So, don't stress folks, go out, enjoy the snow, and if there's someone you know who can't enjoy the snow (because they're snowed in, annoyed that they can't drive anywhere, or just cold)... go help them out. Here endeth the lesson :) Random word for today: frost << last entry ... next entry >> Interesting doughnuts - Sunday, Feb. 05, 2006 Blogging, why? - Friday, Feb. 03, 2006 Dreams, climate change - Friday, Feb. 03, 2006 In the shadows - Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006 |
