There will be another song for me, for I will sing it
2001-06-14 - 18:00

This revision is annoying me - I can't seem to take anything in. It's driving me MAAAAD. I went to sleep at around 1pm because I was really tired - meant to do an hour, but made the fatal mistake of turning my alarm off before I'd woken up properly. And I don't feel any better. How annoying.

But I did have an excellent driving lesson yesterday. Phil's normal nagging was replaced by him telling me to slow down. It was quite late at night, but I just felt really confident at the wheel.

And I also had a ponder today about music. Have you noticed that there are so many songs people don't really understand, but sing/play anyway? Like the Police's immortal lyric 'De do do do de da da da is all I have to say to you.' And that deep poetic song from Grease that begins, 'We go together like ramalamalamalama ding-a-de-ding-a-dong'. Or something. And then there are the songs that sound perfectly sensible until you realise that you haven't a clue what they're talking about, such as Simon and Garfunkel's 'The Sound of Silence'. Plus, there must be a deeper meaning to another great song of theirs, 'At the Zoo.' And Alanis Morrisette, in 'Thank You' (not to be confused with Dido's 'Thank You') refers to 'transparent dangling carrots'. I mean, what's it all about? (Hmm, just caught myself quoting from 'I don't know how to love him', Jesus Christ Superstar) And at least half of the people I know don't know the true meaning behind 'American Pie' by Don McLean. It's a song about Buddy Holly's death!!

But none of these songs surpasses the sheer weirdness of Jimmy Webb's 'MacArthur Park'. In fact, I was singing it to Stephen this morning and he thought it was a spoof. Nope, those are the real words.

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down...
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!

In fact, Weird Al's version actually makes much more sense.

Apparently, it's actually about a love affair ending - ie., the cake and the rain thing is a metaphor for that. Quite disturbing. Actually listening to the song (I got it off the Jimmy Webb site), it's not really all that bad... Pity about the chorus, really.

I also listened to Chris de Burgh's album 'Beautiful Dreams' today. Musically that album was very good, with gorgeous arrangements of 'Lady in Red' and 'Say Goodbye to it all'. But C de B, what are you doing? It was also full of cliches. Quite amazing really, when you consider what a brilliant album Best Moves was (minus Spanish Train, but if you've heard it, you can guess why I have objections). I thought 'Girl' was quite good, but it's by Lennon and McCartney, so never mind. It was full of love songs, and songs about how he'd always be friends with whoever the song was for. And it was just kind of annoying, after 'The Traveller', 'Crusader' and 'Patricia the Stripper', to find that he's getting all deep and meaningful, and not in a good way. Too much!!!

I'm not sure why I'm talking about this - last I checked, I was the only Diarylander with Chris de Burgh listed as a favourite.

Does anyone else like the idea of a public diary? 'Cause I do. Maybe I'll start one.
