It's still colorimetry
Wednesday, May. 14, 2003 - 23:50

Hah, if the people who sneered at these jokes could read this, I'd probably get lynched for being the greatest nerd on the planet...

To the tune of 'It's still Rock 'n' Roll to me' by Billy Joel.

Got a reaction where the mixture goes cloudy
Or turns a clear liquid blue?
Got a nice set of clean cuvettes?
Well you know what you gotta do.
Why don't you do what they said in the lecture?
Test the UV-Vis absorbance spectra
Chemistry might be so high-tech
Funny, but it's still colorimetry.

What's matter with bacteria you're growing?
"Can't you tell I can't count them all?
Should I plate them out to get them all going?"
Well you can, but it's your call
You can do it with your serial dilutions
But plating 'em out is always a nuisance.
Sad fate, don't wait, get a standard, calibrate
It's still colorimetry

Oh it doesn't matter what they said in your high school
'Cause that's never been real biology
You could plate them all out, but you can't muck about
With spectrophotometry
And measure the turbidity…

How about that atomic absorbance
And calcium's bright red flame?
Well it might have some pretty apparatus
But the principle's just the same
Don't waste your lab time on annoying titrations
It's more fun with some universal indications
Spectrophotometry, not so fancy to me
It's still colorimetry

Say Biochemistry is complicated?
I think you're quite out of touch
"How do I get to be a 1st degree student?"
Try not to try too much
Be sure just to make up a blank solution
Set everything to the right resolution
This spectrophotometry is not so fancy to me
It's still colorimetry
Chemistry might be so high-tech
Funny, but it's still colorimetry.

I also posted it on Am I Right. It's a pretty cool site actually.

Heh, had a cool lecture today. The lecturer was asking multiple choice questions, the sort where it's usually best to go with the majority (like 'Who wants to be a millionaire'!). You know, he calls out a letter and people put their hands up. Well on one of the questions, only five people put their hand up for option A, including me... and we were right. Heh :D It's nice when that happens, makes me feel less afraid of failure when I can go against the majority and be right for once.

Oh yes, and I'm on women's committee. There were very few people standing anyway, so there was absolutely no competition.

Thanks Ana-Warda! Glad you enjoyed it :)

Random word for today: spectrophotometry
