Internet IQ tests damage your IQ
Friday, Apr. 22, 2005 - 16:16 Hi folks. Did you hear that e-mail apparently lowers your IQ? No really, e-mail addiction is bad for you. Which makes me wonder if there's a correlation between my supposed intelligence and the fact that I'm disastrously bad at responding to e-mail. I also notice that apparently "Computers make kids dumb". What a charming turn of phrase that is. It's alledgedly because "children with computers neglect their homework more". Which is true, in my case, but I don't think I'd argue for not having computers because I think my writing skills have vastly improved because of owning one, I have a heightened understanding of global issues and, of course, I've met some really great people. Which is not to say that computer users can't waste their time and spend their time on silly websites or get addicted to twenty different variants on Tetris. But that's life. To be honest, on my death bed I doubt I'm going to be murmuring "Why didn't I do more homework?" but more likely "why didn't I try to understand people more?" Today, not having much to do, I've been compulsively checking the BBC website and keeping up on election news/gossip. This alone is probably lowering my IQ. After a while my brain got fuzzy and I had to go for a walk. While computers are infinitely preferable to television, would it be nice if we could leave both things aside for a while and enjoy 'real life' for a bit? Or is that too much to ask of whoever reads this web diary :) I have got some kind of worrying election addiction right now. I stay up late to watch Question Time. I even watched Newsnight the other day. I was also far too emotionally involved with who the new Pope would be, considering I'm not Catholic (well, I was hoping for a Third World Pope), and then I realised that if I really wanted the right man for the job, it was unfair to first judge him on whether he came from a world power or not. So I hope Benedict XVI is the right man for the job, and that God will direct him and guide him to use his power for good.
