Phonecall from Eric
Monday, Aug. 27, 2001 - 19:05 What can I say about talking to Eric? Eric is 45, single, has impaired vision and loves cats. He's an atheist, and that's how we 'met' - I was 13, internet loving and a Christian - and I really love cats. We debated, discussed, and we appreciated cats together. We write to each other - just now he called and we had a lovely conversation. I love Eric. How can I not? We talk about everything from Mr. Ginger and Minnie's respective lives (our cats, naturally :-) ) to discussing God. When I talk to him I sometimes feel like I have an extra set of eyes, I'm seeing in a different way; we're an excellent pairing. Today he told me I'm like a sister, and in a way I feel the same. It's like we managed to cut down all the barriers like looks, geography, ability, age, everything except maybe intelligence and cats, and we're two minds who can talk and love each other. My grandma occasionally seems worried that there is something perverse about it (well you hear about these men on the internet...) but Eric is living proof that internet friendships can work! There are things we can't do, like hug, do each other's lawns, and our presents have to be small. There are some things that just can't happen like in normal friendships, but on the other hand, we can talk, comfort each other, and we can discuss philosophy so well because our view of life is just different enough. We discussed a lot of philosophy today. And discussed our friendship. In a way I feel I didn't really do him justice... but Eric is my friend, my good friend. We were discussing love, and when like becomes love, and I think it's really to do with sacrifice - you have to be willing to do something for someone you love, and not just appreciate them... That's a part of why Jesus had to die - for God to become a man and die is how we understand the ultimate sacrifice. We were bouncing ideas around about love, what love is, what makes it worthwhile - Eric said how there's a lot involved in attraction, and yet love is not really worth anything if you're only loving lovely people - like Jesus said, 'Love your enemies' - he said the command was a bit harsh and difficult in a way, but being able to love your enemies makes that love valuable. Or like in Dream for an insomniac - "I like a good cappuccino, but I wouldn't have one if I couldn't get it for free." We also discussed how children learn the facts of life. That was kinda funny :-) I love it that we can learn so much from each other. God bless my beautiful friend.
