Another feminist rant
Friday, May. 10, 2002 - 11:24 *yawn* tired as usual but actually managed to get a decent breakfast this morning. I must say, reading about Alice's sleep trouble I feel rather ungrateful that I neglect to get enough sleep all the time. Of course, uni will make getting up later more feasible, but if I turn into a rowdy student, I will have to promise myself that I will catch up on sleep. Because I'm lucky in that I usually fall asleep easily, I ought to show my thankfulness for that somehow by actually sleeping when I need to. (please pray for Alice btw :) ) I'm in school. We looked through General Studies papers this morning, and they look all right. It's recommended that you know about the development of one literary style, so I'll read Gold by Isaac Asimov again and talk about science fiction, if that comes up :) There were three articles all interesting for the feminists (or even misogynists! :) ) among us. One was saying that women have been made slaves to employment, that they can only be 'equal' if they do not have children and that this is unfair, and another was saying that there are no great female composers, artists, or playwrights because women aren't orientated towards those kinds of things. I'm not sure I agree with either, although I think it's true that it's often neglected that men and women have to have different roles to some extent, simply because women get pregnant and men don't. Fairness instead of equality? One of the ultimate goals of feminism should be to show that whilst the gender roles will always be a bit different, neither one is inferior, and each one should be given adequate support. As for the no female composers/artists/playwrights of note, that still doesn't make womankind inferior. It's not an excuse to put man upon a pedestal just because the classics were produced mostly by men. We can admire their work, but I don't think it should be a matter of feminist debate. I don't think feminists need to defend women in that sense, because practically, plays, symphonies and art are of little virtue. Yes, they're enjoyable, they can be of great genius and our culture undoubtedly wouldn't be the same without them. But who looked after Shakespeare's children whilst he went off to the Globe? Just imagine if Anne had died in childbirth... Poor Will, a single parent! With much less time to go and ponder 'To be or not to be', and more 'where can I find a good childminder?'. Entertainment is a fine thing but it isn't just down to great writers - there are plenty of great female performers out there, (plenty of female authors and female poets, too). So to put it bluntly, maybe that opinionist was correct, but what does it matter? What matters is when women are discouraged from the things they are talented with just because they are women. That is the real concern. Thank you for listening ;-) Random word for today: << last entry ... next entry >> Interesting doughnuts - Sunday, Feb. 05, 2006 Blogging, why? - Friday, Feb. 03, 2006 Dreams, climate change - Friday, Feb. 03, 2006 In the shadows - Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006 |
