Is God nice?
Tuesday, Jul. 22, 2003 - 22:32 We went to see Bruce Almighty today. Amazingly enough, it's a fantastic film, do go see it. A bit shocking in some places, but pretty much all good :) Hollywood Jesus have the text of an interview with the director (spoilers) - it's really interesting. Thanks Rosina and Rick for your interesting (and long!) guestbook signings. Rosina, I'd be fascinated to read the 'what you believe' piece you wrote, my e-mail address is above under 'e-mail'. Be sure to remove the capital letters before sending though :) It's sadly true that education has been meddled with far too much. It makes me so angry. Rick, your diary looked interesting - I'll have to remember to check it out! Maria - hehe, yes I don't believe I mentioned the 'climbing frame' incident. So for the benefit of my other readers, my three young cousins decided to climb all over me, and when I protested I was not a climbing frame, Tim got a sign reading 'I am a climing frame' and stuck it to my back. Hehehe. I feel like a dreadful meany to start all the questions again. I've been questioning and considering and wondering so much I don't really want to fill my diary with all of it. But anyway. Here comes the next round of considering. The thing about Conversations with God that gets me most, the thing that catches me when I wonder if it is blasphemous or something along those lines, is that Neale Donald Walsch's God seems much nicer than mine. There it is. I wonder if this loving, chilled, humorous, apparently imaginary God offends my real big scary vengeful favouritist God. Then I think I would much rather have the loving, chilled humorous God, because he seems friendly and tolerant and not prone to create strange arbitrary rules or send people to hell because they never said the magic words. Think about it. God loves all of us - right? Everyone, sinners and all. So, he makes the opportunity for forgiveness. But you only get forgiven if 1) you hear how to get forgiven and 2) you follow it to the letter, along with whatever random spiritual baggage is attached by your respective church. But... and I know this is a terribly basic question but, what if you never heard the message of Jesus? There must be plenty of people out there who haven't. North Korea, China, all the fundamentalist Muslim countries. Lots of people. Lots and lots. God hasn't created a terribly efficient system for those people he loves so much. Rick, you gave me a lovely comprehensive reply to my last rant in my guestbook - but forgive me, because I'm at it again. Why is homosexuality such a problem? I can sympathise with the argument that sin is ignoring God but picking out homosexuality strikes me as an arbitrary dislike, because there's no reason why it should be so wrong. Absolutely none. Dare I say that the same goes for pre-marital sex? For eating bacon? Each can have harmful effects, but imagine, marriage, that apparently sanctified state, can be very bad if the two people are not really prepared. Perhaps it's not 'natural' but in any case, that is an awful argument for anything. You want to live in a cave? You want that meat raw? Your electricity is doing more damage to the planet than homosexuality, imagine that! *sigh* I'm just... thinking that there appears to be an awful lot that doesn't make sense here. On one hand, I have heard too much to believe Christianity is wrong. On the other, I have heard too much to believe that it is right! Is the weak spot in my faith a desire for a nice God? I mean, I thought God loved everyone, but everyone who seems to think they know something on the topic seems to cast him as uptight, rule-stricken and not much fun. That's probably why I liked Bruce Almighty so much :) Random word for today: schadenfreude << last entry ... next entry >> Interesting doughnuts - Sunday, Feb. 05, 2006 Blogging, why? - Friday, Feb. 03, 2006 Dreams, climate change - Friday, Feb. 03, 2006 In the shadows - Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006 |
