Jill of all trades
Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002 - 22:06 Hello peeps... Still... thinking. There's something I know I need to do - for my own peace of mind, not exam grades - but I keep putting it off. Oh dear, I really need another diary for these things! There's a short story comp at school (750 words! that's not a story, it's a paragraph!) that I want to enter. It's on The Elements. They meant Earth, Wind, Fire and Water, but being a chemist I feel more drawn to hydrogen, helium, lithium, beryllium etc. Mrs L (organising) said we could write about the periodic table if we wanted (whilst somehow implying that only a mad person could consider this!). There's also a Poetry Competition I want to go in for. And I want to write a Snape fanfic... finish a load of stories I'm writing... and I haven't touched schoolwork yet!! :-) Seriously, though, I have a Biology exam on the 23rd and a Chemistry exam on the 24th. (Hmm... just remembered, it's Faith and Light tomorrow). Clive just went through respiration with me (the biochemistry - not the practical, I can do that)... feeling much better about it. Chris threw some compliments my way *g* which cheered me up a bit... it was helpful. OK, I'm promising myself I will stop at half past ten. Sooo... A bit of self-discovery today. I'm a bit of an abstract person. Meaning... I have many attitudes, and many interests. I can be sentimental and practical... I can read New Scientist, or sit comfortably reading The Economist to find out what's wrong with Tony B's foreign policy. I can give that up and find out if Slytherin Pride (possibly my fave HP fanfic at the moment) has been updated... In some ways, it has bothered me. I am interested in a lot of things, but whilst I can tell people a lot of varied things, I can't go into great depth in one subject. Feel a bit like a fence sitter everywhere. One day Freudian theory, the next socialism, the next Babylon 5, the next acid-base equilibria, the next protein synthesis (yay), the next Harry Potter (quadruple yay, can I do a degree in Potter studies?), the next... hmm... maybe needlework. Or philosophy. It does kinda bother me that I'm not the member of any one camp... my one truly fanatical (in a good way!) interest is God... or at least the one I want to work on the most. But on the other hand it's very fun indeed. From Dickens to Dahl on my bookshelf, Amazonian Dreams to Matt Redman on my playlist... apart from my overuse of the internet... there's a lot going on in that brain of mine. I mean, a lot of different things. And I think, hey maybe I will make a good teacher after all, seeing as I like so many things. Even if I do think that General Studies is bunk. (The lessons are all right, but most of the time you don't learn anything, you just opinionise and reproduce stuff that was on the news... what's the point???) Anyway. I like doing interesting things. Like inorganic chemistry... and pressing flowers.
