Looking back I could have played it differently...
Monday, Dec. 22, 2003 - 22:10 So yes, I'm home (and have been for a while now), managed to avert a minor money crisis (I feel terribly grown up to be having those) and am now in a happily reminiscy mood (I watched 'Test the Nation 2003'... hence the mood). Reviewing January's resolutions... well, they were a rather pathetic bunch weren't they? Didn't have the power and the targets and the specificity that resolutions should have. Still, they were... - To be totally and relentlessly myself. Haven't been doing a bad job, actually. I guess I just realised that ... "There's nobody I'd rather be, I am the one and only... Can't take that away from me....." Thank you, Chesney Hawkes. - To stay at uni until the end of the academic year. Well, duh. - To be a good girlfriend... Oh yes, I have to call Matthew. BRB. OK, back now. We chatted and played scrabble online. He won, drastically. - To start singing in public right now. I was singing 'Tomorrow' from Annie in public today. It's cheerful and a tad over idealised :D The sun'll come out tomorrow Well, it's cute when she sings it. - To work on being more optimistic. According to my adfirmometer, my optimism levels have gone up by 1.3 indigo units since last year. A good job, I feel! - To incite a resolution through my art. Unfortunately, not yet.
Take the What Should Your New Year's Resolution Be? Quiz So... let's look back at those interesting events of 2003! I bought a pretty dress and went to the Minster Ball. It was cold. But classy. Awesomely high walls, intricate carvings... and cold. Lots of girls with bare shoulders (including me) in a stone building heated by a few radiators in January... On reflection, I don't think holding it in January was really such a good idea. All the food was cold too. It was meant to be, but what I wouldn't have given for hot roast potatoes and gravy. I had two cups of coffee (with lots of sugar of course :) ). It was classy though, there is, for some reason, something wonderful about wandering around dressed up formally in a beautiful building, fairy-tale-ish maybe. I joined Christian Focus. Actually I'm mildly frustrated with them at the moment. At the end of term/Christmas meal lots of people were just mucking about during the carols. I'm not against enjoying them, but they seemed to be ignoring what they were all about. *Sigh*. *content smile* I went to Christian Focus. They're nice, friendly, sensible, and willing to improve. I got my first ever proper Valentine's card. No prizes for guessing who it was from. The largest protest London has ever seen took place on February 15th. Incidentally, I was there. It does bother me slightly that Saddam might see the millions of people who protested yesterday as saving his skin... but as a placard aptly said, 'Children will die, not Saddam'. I don't see how we can consider that the many civilians who would die in all-out war are worth the price of getting Saddam Hussein. I can't see what divine right our nation has to completely destroy the infrastructure of a nation, to murder people who have just as much a right to live as we do, and then call it 'an act of humanity'. I was temporarily visited by a bat. I'd never seen a bat before. To see this incredible creature up close was so utterly worth it. The United Kingdom got nul points for Jemini's painful song in the Eurovision Song Contest. Our lowest score went to the United Kingdom. Well, I think so - Dr. Who James gave us 12 on the grounds that it was us, but the rest of us gave nil points, apart from Richard, who gave the UK 'i'. The square-root of minus one. I got drunk, much to my displeasure the next morning. Let that be a warning to you all. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was published, breaking lots of records in various ways, and angering the fanfic writing population who will be appearing in a protest march near you to get their favourite character back. Sooo... Didn't think Order of the Phoenix was as good as Goblet of Fire, but it was still great, and let's face it, JKR churned out a lot of words for us I got a new job, in an Italian deli. Which is nice, as one of my new year resolutions for 2002 was to get a new job, preferably in the local Italian deli. (Not the same one.) It's pretty good, the pay is better than the old job and it's more interesting. The only problem is the standing around. There are so few opportunities to sit down that it gets very frustrating having such achy feet. I went to Soul Survivor. Came back refreshed, and feeling a lot clearer. Aaah. David Blaine sat in a box for 44 days over London. I find him fascinating. It's interesting the things I haven't mentioned in my diary. I can't remember whether I mentioned the beginning of the war on Iraq. I didn't mention Saddam's capture (woohoo!)... Still don't think it was worth the dead children. But it's comforting that they found him. I didn't mention that Michelle McManus won Pop Idol, and I'm very pleased because she rocks, she's a wonderful singer and she's different. So what if she's fat? It's a bit sick the way people are obsessing over it. I think she's really pretty. What gets me is the fact that she hasn't let the jibes daunt her. I find this encouraging :D Oh, so many things I didn't mention. I never quite explained the notion of 'Takeaway Society', or told you of our interesting encounter with Magdalena, or told you about Chris (Sian's housemate)'s 21st birthday party. But oh well... I may tell you at some point. But to be honest, I probably never wrote some things down because I'm convinced I'll remember them without it.
