God does lots of stuff
2001-07-31 - 08:55 Yesterday was so great. I was planning to get the bus to the church that is hosting the Noise for their area - Mum gave me the money, asking me to use it for job hunting but with, I believe, the general impression that I'd use it for the Noise too. But then Esther, one of the people organising, offered to give me a lift. She did arrive rather late but it was still cool :-) It was so encouraging because she kept saying how good it was that people outside her church were taking part, and how one extra person would make plenty of difference, that kind of thing. Things seem to have been rather disorganised on her part, but they still turned out very well. At the church, we had a short worship session and then Esther talked about putting on the full armour of God! Later on when we went to another church that's holding a 'drop-in centre' all this week and there was a picture of the full armour of God (Ephesians 6) so I suggested to Chris that if we felt discouraged we could come and look at it! Christina and I went with Ruth to do children's games - others were doing litter picking, gardening, and the drop-in centre, being a place for a tea and a chat. Ruth is a Canadian living in Germany (don't ask me why she was in England!) with a small daughter called Michaela and a very nearly due son called Oscar. Chris and I went to fill up some balloons with water at the other church, and then Chris did badge decorating with glitter and stamps, Ruth ran some games and I went back for more balloons as we'd attracted hordes of children! A boy called Reece, or Rhys (pardon my ignorance) volunteered to help me, so we went up together. It was quite a nice chat - we talked about the area, and it turns out to be quite a rough place, but he was really pleased that we'd come to do games and said he wished that we were doing them all summer! I told him a little about what the Noise had already done and how I liked doing it. We came back, the children were playing rounders (baseball! Well near enough anyway) and I took over from Christina doing badges. They were little cardboard things with pins. The kids were lovely, but what a variety! I did my best to help the shy ones, I know how that feels. They all seemed rather impressed with the set-up, getting free doughnuts and ice poles. One girl asked me what it was all for, and I said that we were Christians and we believe that God wants us to help people. She said, 'You don't look like the Church type!' which made quite a few people laugh when I told them later. She also accused me of making fun of nature but I was actually imitating an old Prudential advert 'I want to be - a tree!' Not to mention the cringeworthy Sunday school song of the same name :-) I think she was joking, though :-) Later on, someone mentioned praying, and her response was rather a negative bemusement, but I enthused that praying is talking to God as a friend - it was really good that I'd got to say that. Later, Esther said that if that was the only conversation anyone had had, it made the whole thing worth it! The thing is, it was so easy to say, but if God hadn't allowed for that situation I wouldn't have said it at all. We got back, and discussed how things had gone - some of the people doing litter picking and gardening said that they'd sent children along to us, which was good, and some had promised to come today even though they weren't able to come then. We're having a waterfight today! Yay! And we had a pray, as well as Chris and I coming up with new ideas for crafty things they could do, like maybe a big collage using crepe paper (Esther suggested old magazines as a low budget alternative). Brad (who I've met at Regeneration, who is Chris's ex Adam's best friend, and Esther's boyfriend) gave Chris and me a lift home, and apart from having severe trouble getting up a hill (we did in the end, whilst frantically praying!) we had a fairly uneventful drive home. Esther and Brad are both really wonderful people, and so up for God. I'm just praying loads for the Noise now! We all need to rely on God, to be filled with the Holy Spirit, and to act with the greatest of love. I'm done! Now I'm off for a bath...
