Last year's jeans...
Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002 - 10:26 I went to see Victoria Wood yesterday. She was so funny! Plus, if the teacher thing falls through (it won't) I'd quite like to be a stand-up comedian. It looks like so much fun :) One of the things that interested me was that she talked about compulsive over-eating. Obviously not a depressing in depth account - it was for comedy purposes, she advised te audience that it was a good addiction to get if you wanted an addiction. It's quite cheap, compared to the price of drugs or alcohol. She said how she went to Disneyworld and saw hundreds of people with huge arses, eating. 'I'm sorry... in England if you're fat you don't eat in public. Eating has to be done in secret with much shame and guilt if you're a compulsive over-eater.' It seemed strange to listen to someone talk about it that frankly - though it was comedy, she was making a serious point. And then during the interval, Maria (my aunty) leaned over and told us that one of her friends had been to America and seen so many huge people in the supermarket, it was disgusting, you don't expect to see people like that everyday. 'Indeed,' I thought. 'The tourist board should clear them up, or maybe have an allocated day when fat people are allowed to come out and do their shopping, so that the rest of the population doesn't have to see their huge backsides.' Of course, I didn't think that. But had she completely missed the point? Then the three women - Mum, Grandma and Maria, asked each other how their respective diets were going. Is there something about women, that when they reach around 30 they're suddenly on a constant diet? It makes me sad... wouldn't it be nice if our first concern wasn't whether we are going to fit into last year's jeans?
