A day in Margate
2001-05-30 - 19:39 To Margate. I got up at say, 6:30, abnormally early for a holiday, and checked the sky for clouds. There were a few - a little worried that it would cloud over and rain, but it was OK. Had a bath, washed my hair (2 in 1, to be quick) shaved my legs (that was very, very slow. Who wants to shave their legs when they're only going to wear trousers? Packed bag, breakfast, phoned Chris to tell her I'd be about half an hour late. Had a minor squabble with Clive over using the phone - he was over-stressed but I handled it badly. Put on platform sandals (my favourite shoes), went and caught bus. Took bus to the bank, got money, walked to the station. In a very short space of time my most favourite shoes had become my least favourite shoes. That's what you get for judging by appearance. Wish I'd grabbed my plain old Springers, comfy and open. Instead, I decided to adopt the blister formers. Anyway, I bought a ticket for Margate and Dreamland, a few stops down the line I met Christina, and eventually we were on the train down to the coast. Took off the blister-formers (walked barefooted - I know this isn't the word, I'm just teasing Chris :-) ) and I've now vowed to wear them only at 70s nights and parties where there will be the minimum of walking. We saw Jacqui and Cait (short for Jacquelyn and Caitlin, hence the spellings) in the ladies, two girls who would be my cousins if it weren't for the steps and marriages, and I said hello to June, their mother, whom I haven't seen in ages. There's a long and boring story behind all of this. Suffice it to say, we were happy to see each other but didn't follow each other around all the time. We went to get wristbands for the rides - Chris had to buy hers extra, but I got mine with the train ticket. We went on some excellent rides - the Haunted House (for some reason) which was even less scary than usual, because there was very little in the way of spooky music, the lighting was terrible, and there was the constant sounding of bells to signal another cart to go in. The only really scary thing was me going 'The Bells! The Bells!' (Someone please tell me where that is from, I fell quite embarrassed that I don't know). I suggested that we go in again and put our suntan lotion on our faces so we looked pale, and act really scared. It might actually make the ride seem worth it :-) I drove the dodgems for the first time, and although the steering is funny I think I did all right :-) We went on the Looping Star, an excellent rollercoaster (disappointingly, though, with only one proper loop :-( ) and a cool spinny-swingy thing that was rather relaxing. We went on the Wild Mouse, which was jerky. Chris liked it, but I didn't much. And then there was the log flume, for which I would have got the photo, only it was far too embarrassing. Chris was in front, desperately trying to keep her mouth closed (lest any water get in) and I was in an apparent state of shock, practically lying against the floor of the boat. We got much more soaked than on several of the ones I've been on before, and as it was hot, this was actually quite nice :-) We went on the carousel, I'm not sure why, rerode the Looping Star and stopped for a quick chat with June and Jacqui and Cait, before getting some food. I had a waffle with ice-cream and maple syrup. The waffle tasted oddly of Yorkshire Pudding, so it was a bit like having main course and dessert together :-) Chris had a pancake with black cherry and maple syrup. She didn't eat it all! We went down to the beach after that, although for all the testosterone we seemed to aggravate in our swimming costumes, it was quite daunting. I guess I can see the point in modesty of clothing after all. There's hope for me yet :-) But nice to be lying in the sun, and the sea was nice and cool. We discussed such interesting topics as 'Does Satan exist?' 'What is Hell like?' etc. And I dug holes in the sand and made handprints. We left at about 3:30, and got changed, then got on the train home. I spent most of the journey reading a brilliant book Chris had given me. It's called The shock of your life by Adrian Holloway. It's really really good. Pleeeease read it. It features three teenagers after they've all been killed in the same car crash, one at a time, and what happens then. It's based around the Bible and makes it so real! I'm not talking about 'Movie based on book' type based on, I'm saying that the Bible is the truth the resounds throughout this entire work, albeit fiction. The only questionable points are explained at the back of the book. Anyway, enough publicity. :-) I had a great day. Hope you all did too!!
