Sonnez les telephones, sonnez les telephones

There's something rather amusing about the object that is a mobile phone (a cell phone, you might like to call it). It reminds me of the Knight in Through the Looking Glass, with all kinds of objects attached to the saddle - a bee-hive, a mousetrap, candlesticks, carrots, fire-irons... We wander around with this object because we can't bear to be uncontactable, and in all the places where there is a signal, there are usually payphones at least anyway. We're a generation that carries along with us those little portable versions of items that are still luxury for many poor people of our country - phones, stereos, TVs, computers - if a laptop's not good enough, why not a palmtop? Carrying our homes on our backs like middle-class tortoises. Madness. Of course, you can have a make-shift fridge by carrying ice-packs and a cool-bag, but I must say, I'd be seriously unsurprised if I heard that they're developing a portable electric refridgerator or a portable mini-cooker for busy commuters who can't get home in time for dinner. They'd make a portable version of everything but the kitchen sink. I mean, where would the plumbing go?

I now have a mobile phone. Didn't buy it, it was a free one Mum made me get. I was very skeptical until I realised that it's also a musical instrument. I spent about half an hour this morning working out how to play 'Frere Jacques'. (1231 1231 369 369 9#9631 9#9631 171 171 is a reasonable interpretation)
