And winter returns to Narnia
2001-06-16 - 12:24 p.m. I read something scandalous in Private Eye yesterday around Grandad's. Had to check it was true, so I search the Telegraph and found this story. HarperCollins have been granted permission rewrite the Chronicles of Narnia, 'without any references to Christianity.' It is shocking to consider it. For one thing, many non-Christians have enjoyed the Narnia books anyway, and any tailoring of the books to their taste would be unnecessary. The books don't preach a message; they're stories, not sermons. But it's also patently obvious to someone who knows that Lewis wrote them with Biblical references and Christianity in mind, that they were also intended to be an allegory, ie. they have a message that Christians can appreciate as well as enjoying the book. To remove them would be to remove most of the story. I don't see how they would do it, could do it, or should do it!! It's an affront to C.S. Lewis's memory, and changing the books would be as ridiculous as taking the magic out of Harry Potter to open it for a wider audience. You might as well take the gods out of the Belgariad. I'm going to send an e-mail to the Telegraph, and pray about it besides.
