On writer's block and plot bunnies
Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002 - 18:05 Late on Thursday last week, I decided that since I read (and write) so much of it, that I wouldn't read or write any (Harry Potter) fanfiction for a week. It's getting a bit ridiculous, practically every empty day I've had I've filled up with my own contribution to J.K. Rowling's Potterverse, and reading other people's. So I'm struggling to think of something else to write, and the only thing I feel inspired to write is romance. Not only that, but a sequel. *sigh*. Writer's block is almost as deadly as plot bunnies. Plot bunnies are those story ideas that 'pop up' at just the time when you don't have many spare moments to write. There's something very frustrating about having ideas and not being able to write them down - I remember reading that Isaac Asimov, when working on a story, would become distracted so much that he actually worried his wife. (I remember thinking, 'so it's not just me!') You have to do something with them, or either you forget them (which is most annoying once you've got writer's block) or you end up using too much brain power attempting to conserve them. Writer's block is better and worse. It's better because unlike attack of the plot bunnies, you actually have time for a life. But it's worse because there's not much you can do about it. Or at least, nothing foolproof. You can't look for ideas for stories, they generally pop out at you. Or at least that's the way I experience it. But... I do have a file of story ideas, set aside for an emergency such as this one :) After all, I can't sit here writing romance all my life...
