I'll be your tour guide for today...
Wednesday, Mar. 10, 2004 - 19:56 I'm a published author! In a free campus magazine. But hey. It's cool. And I did some paid work today. I led some parents around campus and told them to abandon their children in this fine establishment. What I love about university open days compared to school open days, is principally down to two things. 1) I get paid for doing it, as opposed to getting told off for not doing it. Actually I enjoyed school open days anyway, but it's the principal of the thing. I taught people science two years running. After that I played Whiter Shade of Pale on the piano (music open days were great, the only good thing about music GCSE). The next year, Christina and I led a woman around telling her how her child (who wasn't present) would love it there. But still - I always felt somewhat annoyed about their insistence that we should be there. Dr. H begged us to volunteer, and he's going to pay us. Whoo. 2) I can say whatever the heck I like. If I said anything bad about school during school open days I would be up a certain creek with no paddle. Here, I can say things like 'Well, the accomodation could be better, the sports facilities are rubbish" etc. And honesty is actually encouraged. Because here, students are human beings, not useful commodities, to be bought, worked, and then passed on to the next establishment. Parents actually grabbed me and asked me what I thought of the cherry blossomy picture painted of the Uni. The thing is, I was bouncy and enthusiastic anyway. Because I love the societies and even the crappy accomodation, I love campus media in all its squalor... er, glory, I love being a member of a union, I love being able to help run clubs rather than having everything prescribed, I love being able to do independent research, I love being able to stay up until stupid times and still have company, I love video nights and I like being just poor enough to moan about it occasionally :) I love the opportunities, I love the crazy political types even when I want to kill them, and I love living in a community and not just a city. All I have to do now is pass my degree, get my voluntary work (with kids!) and get enough postgraduate positions to stay here for as long as humanly possible... I'm vaguely considering running for SU president next year... Hehe.
