Girls' names and Noisy happenings
2001-08-05 - 22:39 OK, I'm back, and a bit more cheerful. Went to Church. Had a little difficulty concentrating, although it gave me time to ponder about how Satan always hits where you're most vulnerable. What's more, it's a different place every time. He's such a Got prayer at the end - from Joan, whose house we go to after Church in the evenings. She's a lovely person. Told her about the parent situation. I'm so glad we prayed for them. It was really encouraging - how many times a day do I use that word? Encouragement is on my heart. Either I want it, or else I want to give it. Well I did a spiritual gifts quiz a while back that said I had the gift of encouragement, and I'd really like that to be true - because I know what it's like to feel discouraged; it would be wonderful if God could help me encourage others. At Afterchurch (originally named!) we mainly discussed girls' names with Bill, our Youth Leader. They like Esther - what is it with Esthers recently? I met two last week. His wife Liz is eight months pregnant. Many, many names - he didn't like most of the ones I want for my children :-) which is OK I guess (although it would be cruel of me to name a daughter Holly as I've written stories about a Holly and she's a rather smug character to be honest!) Biblical names came up - Mary, Ruth, (Esther, obviously); Arthur (Joan's husband) suggested Salome (!), then Naomi, Priscilla (me, wasn't serious) Jezebel (Simon, who also suggested Pocahontas), Eve, Delilah (both Paul, another leader-y type), Lois. Personally, I like the name Holly. It's festive but prickly. (Weird thoughts I have!) Suggested May, but Simon said that it would be OK if she was born in May, and if I had a daughter and she was late, I'd have to name her June. Don't really like the name June, although I've known a June who was perfectly nice and nothing like the image of a woman called June I always seem to get (on my story site there is a story called Time for a Break involving a June. Why don't you go and read it? It's not very long. And while you're there, how about reading the others and signing the guestbook? :-) ) Anyway, as promised, the Friday of the Noise. It went well - three legged races, some ball games, and I even got some craft going as badgered by Kailey (the girl I spoke to on Monday, see second to last entry) and it was going OK until the gang of kids came along and started causing trouble again. Lorraine and I hurriedly put the craft stuff away before it got destroyed, and next we knew, they'd stolen the football and soft baseball bat, and gone to cause trouble at the bakery. Little did I know, but later found out, that down at the church hosting the drop-in centre they had a prayer session, and as I returned with water balloons a few minutes later the kids were leaving, ball and baseball bat still in hand. I decided not to challenge them, as Kailey was with me (she kinda clung to me - she's a lovely girl though) and I had a heavy bag to carry (full of weapons that I hoped to keep!). But it was just another thing that showed God's power at work - they left so soon, and Lorraine had another baseball bat anyway. The rest of the day went fine, although one boy fell over and walked off, and I hope he's OK! Had a pray for him. When we got back to the church, we held hands and prayed, just to say how thankful we were and ask for the work to continue! (Oh, and on Thursday when it rained in the morning and I MISSED IT - grr - some amazing stuff went on and on Friday morning they were saying it was the best day yet) At 5:30pm, after it was all over, it started to rain, and Esther, laughing, said she had prayed that it would only start to rain by 5:30pm on Friday! We all had a good giggle and it's lovely to know that God shared the joke.
