Give me some quality SF!
Friday, Mar. 21, 2003 - 23:48 You know, I think I've been put off reading science fiction by browsing the science fiction section on Fictionpress. Much as I like watching SF, it seems that apart from Asimov's Elijah Bayley, most written stories are either... 1) A logic puzzle thinly disguised as a story. Augustus Plivip discovers one day that his elasticiser is de-polarised, and he and his colleague Jared Flinge discuss the laws of physics then make some deep philosophical point. 2) The Gringarian Fleet of Falafel have been mortal enemies of the Jungians for millennia... either a) One of the Jungians is the Chosen One and through his bravery destroys the mighty Gringarian Emperor; b) another set of immemorably named aliens attack them both and they have to club together; c) The Gringarian Emperor's daughter falls in love with the Jungian President's son; d) The Gringarians get some amazingly powerful weapon just before their defeat and blow the Jungians out of the sky. Several aliens with unpronouncable names live happily ever after. 3) The Matrix. Basically the same plots but with no bullet time sequences. 4) 'Manga' apparently, with an amazingly good looking and clever and amazing heroine who we all want to kill. Hurrah. Actually I'm being a little unfair. Many published science fiction authors write (or wrote) wonderful stories that are much more imaginative than television. Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Larry Niven, to name but a few. Although I really don't like Foundation. So don't ask me why amateur writers insist on writing about the Klavicators of Poolinguum and how they covet the Jeridium Mines of the Krellian people of Tzim. It's beyond me.
