Quotations and apostrophe's
2001-02-26 - 21:45 I forgot two things about Church yesterday. Firstly, David John swears this is true; a man in America married his television set. Didn’t know what the service was like, but apparently the reception was brilliant. Secondly, this is how I heard Anne; “Lord, we sang just now. Forgive us.” What she actually meant was, “We sang just now, ‘Forgive us’.” I like my version better. In English, Karen Murphy asked the definition of foresight. She was told, “seeing into the future.” So she said, “So does the Wife of Bath have premonitions, then?” Abi wrote me a letter. Most of it is private but I’d like to share this with the rest of you out there. “God is more than the Bible, Koran (etc...) God is AGAPE, UNCONDITIONAL LOVE: Jesus preached for tolerance. Faith is good only if it is not taken for granted and nurtured ‘til the rot wanes away.” I love that last sentence. I want to write it out and frame it. While I’m on quotes (sorry Mrs. Tester, quotations), here is the final one; Mary S. was talking in Communication today about the things we wrote last lesson with her (or without her, I should say, but she was scheduled to take the lesson) on various issues about education. She said she wanted to read out one that someone had written about whether school has taught us important life skills. She said in some ways it was very damning of education. She did not mention the person’s name. “I don’t know anything about banks, pensions, tax, loans, parenting although I’m doing quite well on learning about universities. I do not cook very well; I do not know how to complain in a shop or service; I do not know my rights at work other than that personal questions about sexuality and religion cannot be asked. I do not know a kind way to say ‘no’. I do not know how to resolve conflict between friends. I do not know the correct way to treat disabled people. I do not know how to advertise. I do not know how to love my enemies. I do not know how to stand up for myself and be part of the group. I do not know how to comfort my friends if they binge, fast, cut themselves, behave anti-socially, consider suicide. I do not know how to make people see my views. Lessons would be appreciated.” (Rhetorical question time) How did I remember all that? I didn’t. I copied it out from my work. Baris’s immediate response to that answer was “Christina!” (Who isn’t in my comms class) Which I found rather amusing, considering she is one of my best friends, and has been since Year 7 at least (she was a kind of unofficial friend beforehand) and also I couldn’t see her writing an answer like that!! It would be much longer (although Mary S. didn’t read out the beginning) and probably more constructive. Although maybe I was a little cruel in saying that school has not taught me how to make people see my views, after all, we have done persuasive writing. Mary S. also kept going on about apostrophes, and said you should ask yourself (in a sing-song voice, so as to emphasise the rhythm) “Who does it belong to?” Apparently she has had former students coming up to her and saying that. On planes and up mountains. So she says, it must work. And it probably does, considering that four of the three people who got the apostrophe test completely right were the only ones in the class she had taught that to. Er, to whom she had taught it. Damn. She also pointed out that the correct question is “To whom does it belong?” I wrote down on my apostrophe test “Who doe’s it belong to?” but she probably wouldn’t have found that funny, so I rubbed it out again. I hope you have now learned something. Still haven’t done my sajkologxi. (That’s psychology, for the non-Esperantists who didn’t read yesterday’s entry. And do you know something, I don’t really care either? This is kind of worrying. I keep getting flashes of guilt, but I seem unable to muster up any true enthusiasm. Sara has dyed her hair purple. It is unbelievably cool.
