School's out for Christmas
Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001 - 09:43 It's nearly Christmas. We broke up from school yesterday - got several more Christmas cards. Our last English lesson on Thursday we spent doing 'hotseating' for the Merchant of Venice, meaning that several of us pretended to be characters and the class asked us questions. We did not take it seriously... poor Dr. A! Although I think he only did it because it was something untaxing to do for that last lesson. With Diggers, hotseating was quite serious, except for when he decided to be Charmian, Cleopatra's maid (mwahahaha). With my GCSE English teacher, you didn't dare not take it seriously, but I got to be Lady Macbeth, so that was OK. With Dr. A, though, it was obvious we weren't in the mood... Although I think it was partly his fault, I was Jessica, daughter of Shylock who stole loads of his cash and jewels from him, trading his ring for a monkey. When he asked me if I felt any remorse and I made it plain I didn't, he said, 'She's a hard bitch, isn't she?' and it degenerated from that point onwards. Best bit (paraphrased a bit) - Portia (Christina) - 'You married me for my money? But you still had enough insight to choose the lead casket?' Bassanio (Joe) - 'It's cheap. Just like you.' On Thursday afternoon, we had biology with Dr. D - discussing coursework/investigations. We spent some time in the IT room, but I left before the end to go back to the lab to get a book he suggested. He told me about his wife who works at a special needs school, I told him about Faith and Light. He said, 'It can be very rewarding. Then again, it can be very frustrating!' I agreed, and told him how much I enjoy their company. He said, 'Well you're a fairly laid-back person aren't you?' (I will never understand my teachers, is 'laid-back' a compliment or a criticism??) '-which I think you've got to be if you want to be a special needs teacher. Or any kind of teacher, for that matter.' I think... on one hand, I am even-tempered most of the time. On the other hand, I'd just had recent experiences of 'Helen the beast'. 'I don't lose my temper much,' I said. 'Well... not much, but I do really lose it sometimes.' 'Yeah well, we all do that. Even I do sometimes.' I've not mentioned that Dr. D is one of those laid-back teachers himself. But I was glad we'd had the conversation. Mental note - do not take things too seriously. You were doing ok in the first place... don't lose your temper! Just don't!! It's nice to know there's hope for me yet. Last day... Dr. A warned us not to be 'noisily festive', or indeed festive at all, 'bah humbug' being the phrase of the morning. At least he can laugh at himself :-) PSE was spent writing about our PSE lessons this term so that the teachers know what we thought of them. Wished Mr. B, my form tutor and biology teacher (that's odd, I've not mentioned him in a while) a merry Christmas, he wished me one back, then I wished his cat a merry Christmas and he promised to bring me her skin... Just about sums up the kind of conversations Mr B and I have. Chemistry was the same as always - we had Mr E, revision lesson. Wished him merry Christmas and he seemed rather touched. :-) Of course I wished a lot of people merry Christmas, and Merry Solstice just to really mix up the festivals :-) Random word for today: << last entry ... next entry >> Interesting doughnuts - Sunday, Feb. 05, 2006 Blogging, why? - Friday, Feb. 03, 2006 Dreams, climate change - Friday, Feb. 03, 2006 In the shadows - Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006 |
