Another September 11th
Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002 - 14:14

I guess there's no need to tell you what today is?

Actually, I just remembered... Emma at work has her driving test today...

When I look back to last year, I feel dissatisfied. September 11th was a terrible day, with such phenomenal destruction, and did we let good come of it?

I don't know... The Taliban is gone, I think we should all be pleased about that, but what about the civilians killed in Afghanistan? What about the famines? Why is it so much more important to remember the victims of another culture's barbarism than to remember the victims killed by our own? It's hard to explain, but I felt so angry at much of the media last year. Sensationalism was one of the big things, but another was the good versus evil stuff newspapers liked to talk about. We love to think of ourselves of the good side of the battle of good and evil. If the other side does evil, we must be good and therefore we can do no evil... wrong. The battle of good and evil goes on inside us every day, we can't just sign up for the right side and consider ourselves sanctified...

Sorry about the rant... *sigh*. I feel so helpless, which is the other thing. How painful it must be to have lost someone... I read somewhere someone saying that the media coverage today is too much, that we should let the families of the victims mourn in peace, and not constantly remind them. I'm not so sure I agree, I think it might help people to know the world remembers their loss. For myself personally, though, I don't see what good I could do moping about it all day. Is there anything positive I could do instead? Anyway I could bring some good out of this awfulness?

Anyways, I shall leave it there... I'm currently reading a book called What's a Christian to do with Harry Potter? by Connie Neal which is proving very interesting reading... I'd recommend it to any Christians who love or hate Harry, and I'd also recommend it to the people wondering what some of the Christians complaining about Harry are on about... I love Harry Potter, but the book's made me a little more sympathetic to people on the other side of the argument. More on this later...
