Time flies like the wind, fruit flies like bananas

Hi guys,
Firstly, thanks Sarah Joy for your lovely guestbook signing. I guess what I really envied was not so much the falling on the floor (though I see your point!) but the fact that she seemed so happy about it. Sigh.

I had an awesome weekend. I went to York, saw some old friends, watched the last episode of Doctor Who with some fellow Doctor Who fans (I'm not calling myself a Whovian yet. Speaking of which, is there a term for Harry Potter fans? Are we Muggles or something?), had a barbecue, met some new people, including James's girlfriend (aw :) )... It was nice to see the Dougsoc bunch again, and also nice to see Dan the American on Sunday! He was a really good friend of Matthew's last year, and made a film featuring various places and people around York... and I finally saw the film! It was really good. The dialogue rocked, and the visual effects were very impressive, especially considering the budget. I saw some old movie people, including a guy Matthew and I always called 'Cheerful Mark' and his mum, whom we could call 'Cheerful Mollie'. You can tell they're related - they're both lovely, adorable people. Dan is great too, he's absolutely unflappable, and has a knuckle-crunching handshake. I didn't get a handshake at the weekend, but that's because I got the equivalent hug... Thankfully, my ribs are in tact.

After the weekend, the week was a bit of a letdown! I've done a couple of new lab things this week, stressed about my project for this year, and, most importantly for me, started writing fiction again.

I was reading through some of my old fanfiction yesterday. Yes, I've written fanfiction, mainly for Harry Potter, and it was mainly to pass the time until Order of the Phoenix. There was quite a nice bit where I described someone's invention as "his passion, and his nemesis." Writing is my passion and my nemesis. My joy and my curse.

I think it's because I'm actually a bit too good at English Literature (and don't bother reminding me I only got a B at A-level, I was under-performing). I'm very good at reading and analysing things (I think this is what made me accidentally good at science...). Therefore, despite the fact that I love writing fiction and I'd like to think I'm getting reasonably good at it, I can often pick out when I'm writing total rubbish. Even in one of my favourite stories, there's a section that makes me cringe badly... and I wonder, perhaps rather like I wonder if I'll even be a proper Christian, whether I'll ever write properly. Still, I've been writing. Not much at the moment, but I'll let you know.

I actually talked to Christina yesterday! Yay! She's finished her degree! Not sure if she'd like me to disclose her final grade, but she got a 2:1, so good for her :D

My friend David's going back home tomorrow. We've had drinks together and gone to choir this year, and since I'm going back to York in October (and leaving here in August), Tuesday was probably the last time I'll see him for a while :( I'm going to miss him.

It's weird that I've left my choir now. This year has gone far too quickly.

I was twenty-one years when I wrote this song
I'm twenty-three now but won't be for long
Time rushes on
And the leaves that are green turn to brown

-Simon and Garfunkel.
