"How rebellious... in a conformist kind of way" - Lisa Simpson

Pre entry note- I use the word 'cool' a lot in this entry - usually when I use that word I just mean good, lovely, nice, of great excellence etc. In this entry when I say cool, think of it as the original meaning - fashionable, popular, of wordly value.

As you may have guessed from last entry, I am getting annoyed at all the bitching, putting down and backstabbing I seem to be witnessing. And I'm also getting annoyed at the general attitude about 'cool' and about love that I see all the time. Grr. It's so fake, can't you see that??? (Yells at the world in general).

Firstly, there's the whole cool thing. I hate it so much - on every (expletive) tv show about school/teenagers there are the 'freaks' and the cool people, the general attitude being that coolness is something you're born with - 'Like that is soooo in!' This naturally means you know what clothes to wear, what music to listen to, what tv to watch, what places to go to, you date the best boys/girls, (and in some cases you can treat most people over the age of thirty like crap, too, like that is so cool) and people love you for breaking all those pathetic rules - because, hey didn't you know, these are the things that matter? (Just to add to this idea of coolness, in psych yesterday we watched 'Human Zoo' and witnessed a man steal some beer to prove he was 'dominant male' - the psychologists said that the others' continued bad impression of him was because the first impression is so difficult to change - maybe it was because regardless of how much they like beer, they actually realised it was a pretty sad thing to do for popularity?) Jesus was, I'm proud to say, one of the most spectacularly uncool people around (I mean, 'Love your neighbour', that is so retarded!). He said, "Don't worry and say... 'what will we wear?'" Matthew 6:31. He said totally wacky stuff like "Don't stand up to an evil person" Matthew 5:39a, and instead of doing the decent thing and leading an army against the Romans, he let them kill him. How idiotic is that? (In case you haven't noticed, I'm being ironic)

I use the word cool a lot, and in a good way - but most of what people claim is cool I just can't see. Yeah, let's go break the rules just because we can! I've done some graffiti in my time but it was to make people laugh not to annoy the authority figures. What can I say? Opposing evil is hot, being stupid is not.

The main reason this irritates me is because it used to be my own attitude, back when I was in my 'tweens'... makes me feel stupid just thinking about it. Being popular - yeah, that was cool. Actually trying to be popular turned out to be filling my brain with mindless stuff about clothes, make-up and music that I wasn't really interested in anyway, clinging to people who weren't really my friends, and spending a disproportionate amount of time worrying about how I look. I'm still not popular, but when I gave up looking for that and started trying to be friendly instead it found me friends who accept me for being me, and I'm much happier. I'm so glad God taught me what's important.

And the love attitude is the other thing that's got me riled - in Sabrina, which usually I love as, for one thing, the cool and judgemental girl is depicted as mean and not a desirable role model, all of the boys with the exception of Gordy are desirable because of their looks and coolness... how shallow is that? And Sabrina's one of the better ones (for instance, Harvey being desired both by Libby and Sabrina - Sabrina being less cool in the grand scheme of things, and getting Harvey). How about a film where a boy falls in love with a girl who is still plain and unpopular? And why can't they make a film of Angel Face by Narinder Dhami? (And please use a genuinely spotty and greasy haired girl for the female lead. Read this book! It's hilarious!)

Sheesh, the world sure is annoying me. Let's be uncool together...
