Happy St. George's Day/Shakespeare's Birthday!

Hope you all had a good Easter. The Italian place did not call me (grrs) but since I didn't get a letter either, I called them yesterday and Russell told me that the manager would call me on Thursday.

So have I got the job... or not?

It's nice to be back in York, despite exams. Campus is so green and beautiful. And I've seen lots of people again, including chatting to this guy called John yesterday. I sort of know him (Matthew knows him better), he's marvellously camp. In any case, the poor bloke's had major surgery over the holidays, someone stamped on his face because he was gay. I cannot understand that sort of mindless hatred. It's completely horrific. On the other hand, I could not help but be cheered by his enthusing that, due to his cheekbone being replaced by a metal plate, he can stick fridge poetry to his face! If someone ever inflicts their blind prejudice on me to that extent, I would like to have his ability to maintain good humour.

Whilst I was unpacking yesterday, I left for a moment to talk to Laura, and then came back to get my coat, only to hear a soft thump and see a small dark creature on the floor of my room. It was a bat.

Completely caught by surprise, I ran to get Laura to get a second opinion. "Get Leah," she advised, and I found myself running to get York's resident bat expert.

She picked it up, looked it over, and asked if I had a shoebox or anything. Unable to think of anything suitable, I tipped all of the paper out of my document book (I've put all this safely away now, don't worry :) ) and put some tissue in it, got a small lid and filled it with water. The box got a bit wet, but Leah said the bat wouldn't mind, and oddly enough, when I pondered that the box would probably be damaged by the damp, I really didn't care.

I'd never seen a bat before. To see this incredible creature up close was so utterly worth it.

Later on in the day, we attempted to release the bat (a female. I named her Ashley :) ) into the 'wild', but she wouldn't fly. Currently my unusual lodger is still tucked away in my room and I am awaiting instructions from Leah. I just hope she's all right, I have no idea how she got into my room.

Strange it is, how I'd never noticed that there are bats all around my block late at night. It's odd - and wonderful - how a momentary experience can change my perception, reveal things that were always there but I'd never noticed them.

Anyway, I have a microbiology exam tomorrow, so I'm off to do some revision... :)
